Antecedentes

.um is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States Minor Outlying Islands. The islands that make up the region are the Caribbean Island of Navassa Island, Howland Island, Palmyra Atoll, Johnson Atoll, Wake Island, Baker Island, Jarvis Island, Midway Island and Kinman Reef. These islands are mostly uninhabited, only a few have military and civilian residents.

The .um domain was delegated to the University of Southern California and the Information Sciences Institute. The United States Domain Registrar (USDR) was listed as the contact point for administration and technical assistance. The USDR is also based at the University of Southern California.

Throughout 2006, the UM domain was designated a lame delegation. In October 2006 the University of Southern California stated that they no longer wish to handle the domain and made an appeal to have the domain's TLD status revoked. The servers were repaired in December 2006 so that it was no longer a lame delegation.

The board of ICANN passed a ruling to revoke the delegation and return the domain to unallocated status on the 16th January 2007. The US government sent their written support of this ruling and stated that any future plans to reallocate the domain must have the approval of the United States Department of Commerce.
