.sl is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Sierra Leone

Officially known as the Republic of Sierra Leone, is a country in West Africa. Sierra's capital is Freetown, and it is its largest city and seat of government. Sierra Leone has one of the oldest universities in West Africa, established in 1827 and named the Fourah Bay College. The country is also home to one of the largest natural harbours in the world, called the Quuen Elizabeth II Quay.

The top-level domain name .sl was introduced in 1997, is operated by AFcom and sponsored by Sierratel. The domain name is not very much used, even through its intended use for entities connected with Sierra Leone.

Registrations are permitted at a second level, but it is also possible to register a third-level domain name under certain second-level labels. These second-level domain labels are as follows:

• com.sl -- for commercial entities
• net.sl -- for commercial entities related to networking (such as ISPs, cable companies etc)
• org.sl -- for charities and non-profit organizations
• edu.sl -- for educational institutions registered in Sierra Leone
• gov.sl -- for state and local government entities (requires an authorization letter from the local Minister of Information Office)

The minimum length of characters in a domain name for Sierra Leone during registration is 4 and the maximum is 63 characters. These characters for the domain name can include the letters a-z, the numbers 0-9 and hyphens "-", but the hyphen cannot be used as the first or last character, or when two or more hyphens are used in the domain.

Furthermore, internet reserved names are not valid for registration with a .sl domain name. This includes names such as: company, example, incann, ripe, www and root-servers. Also, domain names that are registered are case insensitive.
