Nauru is an island nation in the Micronesian South Pacific. Nauru is the world's smallest island nation, covering just 21 km², and it is also the mallest independent republic. The .nr domain name was introduced in 1998 and it is operated and sponsored by CenpacNet .

The setup of the .nr domain name was made in 2002 by Franck Martin using specific custom code. In 1998, the .nr TLD domain name configuration was part of the first Internet connectivity for the island, performed by Shaun Moran of the ComT ech Communications (Australia). There was a lengthy process with IANA to get the .nr domain name approved and assigned at the time.
