Antecedentes

.cl is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Chile.

The ccTLD for Chile is .cl and it has been managed by the Department of Computer Science of the University of Chile since 1986. It had begun as an informal process, having been activated for UUCP mail. This informality went on for almost a decade, not restricted by written rules and having no conflicts. The creation of domain names under .cl was only possible due to IANA, being the Internet Assigned Number Authority.

In 2006, Chile came to be the first Latin American country to establish formal relations with ICANN. This was through the signing of an Accountability Framework Agreement, formalizing the relationship between ICANN and NIC Chile. This agreement contained the responsibilities of both companies regarding the preservation of the stability, security and interoperability of the Internet. It has been since its founding in 1998 that ICANN has been able to establish these agreements with managers of ccTLD registries.

Registration of the ccTLD .cl is open to anyone, but foreigners must provide a domestic contact with a RUT which is the Chilean National Identification Number.

Criteria assosiated with the registration of a .cl ccTLD are as follows:

• The Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used.
• Digits (0-9) can be used.
• A hyphen (-) can be used but will not be accepted and the beginning or end of the domain name.
• Accented letters are accepted. These are: á, é, í, ñ, ó, ú and ü.
